3C MaxxTerra
Maxxisโ 3C MaxxTerra is an intermediate triple compound configuration used across our mountain tire line. The 3C MaxxTerra compound offers more traction than 3C MaxxSpeed, yet provides better treadwear and less rolling resistance than MaxxGrip, which makes it ideal for trail riding in all conditions.
3C MaxxGrip
Maxxisโ 3C MaxxGrip compound uses the stickiest, slowest rebounding rubber we offer in a mountain bike tire. This high traction compound is the same one used by our top World Cup Downhill and Enduro World Series athletes and is now available in a variety of casing configurations to cover all riders.

EXO
EXO is a cut- and abrasion-resistant material added to the sidewalls of many Maxxis mountain bike and gravel tires. This densely woven fabric is lightweight and highly flexible, ensuring that the performance of the tire remains unaffected. Choose EXO Protection for enhanced durability for gravel, XC, and light-duty trail riding.
EXO+
EXO+ is Maxxisโ medium-duty puncture protection option suitable for all-around trail riding and light weight e-bikes. We begin with a durable 60 TPI casing, add in our legendary EXO puncture protection layer in the sidewalls, and top it off with a small butyl insert around the bead. The tough casing and EXO material ward off damage from rocks and roots, while the butyl insert protects the tire from pinch flats and helps prevent rim damage.
Double Down (DD)
DoubleDown (DD) is our casing solution for enduro racing and e-bike use. Two layers of our lightweight 120 TPI casing material are combined with a butyl sidewall insert to create a highly durable tire with more trail feedback than a Downhill casing tire. DoubleDown tires are marginally lighter than their Downhill counterparts, but itโs really the difference in โtrail feelโ that sets the two apart. Some riders may prefer the highly damped ride provided by a Downhill casing tire.
Downhill (DH)
As the name implies, Maxxisโ Downhill casing tires are designed for extreme use in all gravity applications from downhill racing to bike park riding to free riding to long travel e-bikes. A Maxxis Downhill tire is made with two layers of our durable 60 TPI casing material along with a large butyl rubber insert that extends from each bead into the sidewall. The butyl insert helps prevent pinch flats, protects the rim from impacts, and provides additional sidewall stability.
NEW DH
The NEW DH Casing delivers improved compliance over rocks and roots, greater support under hard cornering and impacts, and increased durabilityโbecause flat tires are never fast.
On the trail, that means more confidence through technical terrain, a reduced risk of tire and rim damage, and a smoother, more controlled ride that leaves you ready for another lap.

I have one issue with the quality of tire that I received, it has a moldings defect that makes a visual wobble in one section. I had my bike mechanic look at it and he pointed out that the tire was mounted correctly and it was an issue with its mold. Now I have to take the time to go through the warranty process. I’d rather be riding!"

- Does the Assegai come in a 3c MaxxTerra DoubleDown 29x2.5 configuration?
- All Double Down (DD) versions of the Assegai come with the MaxxGrip compound. However, we do offer the Dissector (29x2.50) and Minion DHR II (29x2.40 and 29x2.50) in DD construction with the MaxxTerra compound.
- Do you make an Assegai 27.5 2.60 in a 3CT /DD? I can't find this combo in anything other than a DHR II.
- We do not offer that particular combination, but there is a 27.5x2.60 3CT/EXO+, part number: TB00202700

- What would have more grip and perform better? Maxxis DHF MaxxGrip or Maxxis Assegai MaxxTerra? Which one will have better cornering grip and can be pushed harder? Which one will be planted better and more predictable? Which one does better in Loose over hardpack? And which one does best overall?
- The DHF in MaxxGrip will have better traction in mixed conditions compared to a MaxxTerra Assegai. Which one is better depends on the terrain and conditions you ride most often. The Assegai will be more predictable while the DHF will roll faster.

- Every Maxxis tire model was designed with a specific purpose in mind. The Assegai is a trail/all-mountain/enduro/DH tire, specially crafted for technical terrains and beyond. If you intend to use this entry-level bike for such riding, it could be considered. However, keep in mind that most entry-level bikes come with relatively narrow rims and lower tire clearances, so there might be better options to consider based on that. In such circumstances, the Rekon would be a more suitable tire choice, as it is available in a wider range of sizes.
