MaxxSpeed

The new MaxxSpeed (2023) is our top-shelf rubber compound for XC racing. It’s a high-silica content compound which reduces rolling resistance while also enhancing wet traction. Compared to the previous 3C MaxxSpeed, the new compound has approximately 25% less rolling resistance in a lab setting (using the same tread pattern, construction, and tire pressure). In a real world setting, our testing shows the new compound can save up to a minute over the course of a 90-minute race.

EXO

EXO is a cut- and abrasion-resistant material added to the sidewalls of many Maxxis mountain bike and gravel tires. This densely woven fabric is lightweight and highly flexible, ensuring that the performance of the tire remains unaffected. Choose EXO Protection for enhanced durability for gravel, XC, and light-duty trail riding.

Tubeless Ready

Tubeless ready tires provide the rider with many benefits: the ability to run lower air pressures, which improves traction; lower rolling resistance when compared to a tube-type tire; and less chance of flatting because there is no tube. Tubeless ready tires are denoted by the letters “TR” on the sidewall.
Tubeless ready tires must be mounted to tubeless compatible rims and require the use of a liquid sealant to maintain pressure. Liquid sealants have the added benefit of sealing small punctures. Be sure to check your sealant regularly and refresh as needed as it will dry out over time.
Liquid sealants should only be used in the following types of tires: tubeless road, tubular, and tubeless ready. The use of liquid sealants in any other Maxxis tire will void the warranty.

Wide Trail XC (WT XC)

Maxxis recommends using 2.40″ Wide Trail XC tires on 30mm internal rims. The tires are compatible with rims as narrow as 25mm, but we do not recommend exceeding 30mm wide.

Way better than I expected!!

"I ride hard pack, mixed, loose and some wet once in a while! I was skeptical with this tire’s low thread. Was I surprised, these tires are fantastic! I run an Aspen in front of an an Aspen ST in the rear, both 2. 4 and 170TPI. They are fast, they have excellent grip on rocks, roots climbing and defending! I don’t ride under rain or mud, so I can’t give an opinion there! I combine trail and road, and these tires are just great. I am an advanced rider so I do take my chances, and these tires do not give me a reason to doubt them! would recommend them to an XC riders who ride in similar conditions. I weigh 190lbs, run 23lbs in front and 28 in the rear, depending on the tail I may drop a lb in the rear once in a while! But they are definitely great tires!!"

Aspen 2. 4 for XC Racing

"Made the jump to the Aspen 2. 4 x 29, front and rear, for the current XC race season, coming from the 2. 2 tires that came on my Intense FRO. I thought the increase in size might result in a noticeable increase in rolling resistance, but not the case. I was only able to get one ride in before racing on them. Really like the increase in ride quality/comfort on this 100mm bike and impressed with the grip in corners. Able to run lower Psi helps with climbing traction."

Best all around fast XC tire

"I've had the same pair of Aspens on my bike for about 4 or 5 seasons and I've never suffered damage or a single puncture. I've used them for trail riding and then later saved them strictly for XC racing. I have to say they are some of the best MTB tires I've ever used. I've ridden them in 50 mile MTB races with everything from dry rocks, dust and roots, to muddy slop, slick rock, roots and tall grass. They pretty much perform without complaint. More recently I've used them for fast XC races in various surfaces. Grippier than you might think based on the low profile tread. And more durable than expected being such a light weight tire. Love the Aspens!"

Aspens are the perfect XC

"Aspens are the perfect XC marathon tire! I’ve used them in races from Arkansas, Texas, and the Leadville 100 in Colorado and would highly recommend them. They’re lightweight, fast rolling, tough, and offer plenty of traction. I’ve heard some say they do not offer enough traction and you do have to lean them over to engage the side lug, but most experienced MTB riders do this. I weigh 175 and run 19 psi F and 21 psi R. This is my 2nd set on my Spec Epic Evo and would not consider anything else!"

Can I safely run the Aspen 2.25 on a 30mm internal width wheel? (a Hunt Proven carbon 29er wheel)
Yes, 30mm would be within the acceptable rim width range for a 2.25 tire however around 25mm would be "ideal".
Hello, I just bought my new carbon wheels with 31mm inner width rims. I selected the 2.4 Aspen both for rear and front but for the front I'm not sure if Aspen works properly in winter season (wet conditions). Is it correct? Which alternative would you suggest with more grip in wet conditions? I have a BMC twostroke 01. Thanks
The Aspen is an XC race tire intended for primarily dry conditions. We recommend the Severe for wet conditions.
I’m thinking of running the Aspen.2.25 on rear, what would you recommend for front. Conditions will be rocky technical descent and ascents
The Ikon 2.35 would be a fast capable tire and if the rim width is 25-30mm then you might consider a Rekon 2.40 for even more traction.
Hello. I am curious why Maxxis rates this tire a 2 out of 5 for cornering yet says it is has very grippy side lugs? The Rekon Race is rated 2.5 out of 5 by Maxxis, so I would deduce the Rekon Race is better for cornering. Which of these two truly provides more grip in the WT 2.4 version? I need a fast tire for a 10 our ride on gravel roads in the USA Utah desert . There will be steep loose switchback descents and climbs Thank you
The Rekon Race has a more substantial side knob compared to the Aspen. For looser XC conditions, we recommend the Rekon Race over the Aspen.
