EXO
EXO is a cut- and abrasion-resistant material added to the sidewalls of many Maxxis mountain bike and gravel tires. This densely woven fabric is lightweight and highly flexible, ensuring that the performance of the tire remains unaffected. Choose EXO Protection for enhanced durability for gravel, XC, and light-duty trail riding.
EXO+
EXO+ is Maxxis’ medium-duty puncture protection option suitable for all-around trail riding and light weight e-bikes. We begin with a durable 60 TPI casing, add in our legendary EXO puncture protection layer in the sidewalls, and top it off with a small butyl insert around the bead. The tough casing and EXO material ward off damage from rocks and roots, while the butyl insert protects the tire from pinch flats and helps prevent rim damage.

Wide Trail (WT) construction optimizes the tire’s tread layout and profile on today’s modern, wider rims. Historically, tires were designed around older, narrower rims which can create an overly square tire profile, leading to suboptimal performance. Our Wide Trail (2.40-2.50″ width) tires are optimized for a 35mm inner rim width but are proven to work over a range from 30-35mm inner rim widths, depending on the rider’s preference.

"I think it's fine it's like an aggressive version of the recon race and it did plenty well in Corinn I thought I was on soft forest floor and hard pack having the same construction as my rear dissector should give it some good dependability and longevity too my rear tire hasn't failed yet and it's wearing out to where I'm losing traction and I'll have to stick another one on before too long but it hasn't failed from the Rocky Mountains to the Midwest limestone and Forest trails"

"I bought the 29x2. 60 version, EXO+, 3C Maxx Terra version. I weigh 220 pounds + riding pack. I've been using this as a front tire on a mid-travel trail bike for ~310 miles over the last 3 months or so. After seeing excessive wear on my rear tire (different model) and coming here to leave a review of that, I figured I should also review the front tire, Forekaster. I'm based in MA, and ride primarily wooded trails, lots of roots and rock gardens. I ride mostly intermediate group rides, average pace, nothing too crazy. This tire is set up tubeless at around 24psi. Pros: Fantastic grip, very predictable, relatively low rolling resistance, no sign of premature wear. Cons: None I pulled off an Assegai hoping to get lower rolling resistance and the Forekaster definitely delivered. It probably has a little less traction on wet rocks, but it has plenty for anything I need. When this eventually wears out, I intend to replace it with another of the same."

The Goldilocks AZ front tire
"Perfect AZ front tire for my Yeti SB115. Yeti oem for a SB115 is a Minion DHF 2. 5 which is overkill for much of what I ride, and it's also heavy. I swapped it for a 2. 4 Forekaster and wow. . . what a tire. Even in loose over hardpack the tire has so much traction, without feeling draggy. It's a goldilocks front tire for Arizona trails."

- Would you reccomend these for Desert riding? Loose over hard and very rocky. I’m in a 160mm travel bike.
- Hi there - for a 160mm bike we would point you towards the Minion DHR/Assegai combination. The Forekaster is more suitable for 120-140mm bikes.
- Moving from the heavy dual version Assegai 2.5 front and DHRII 2.4 rear would a good combo for an all mountain trail bike be to have a Forekaster 2.6 exo+ front paired with a Rekon 2.4 Exo+ rear for mixed condition trails? I want to lose a little weight on the bike because local trails require lots of climbing. What other pairings might you suggest?
- The Rekon, Forekaster, and Dissector are all good options to consider. The Rekon is the fastest rolling of the three and the Dissector edges closer to the tires you're coming from. The Forekaster is a good middleground between the other two.
- Can you please compare rolling resistance, traction in the wet, cornering, and braking of the Forecaster versus Rekon? Thanks!
- When comparing the Forekaster and Rekon in the same 2.40 size they would be similar in that they are both considered light duty trail tires or technical conditions XC tires. Basically the Forekaster is good for loose over hard/loose/wet and the Rekon hard pack/loose over hard/loose Rolling Resistance – The Rekon has a slightly tighter tread area so it would likely have lower rolling resistance over the Forekaster. They would be very similar though. Traction in the Wet – The Forekaster would definitely be the wet conditions tire as this is what it was designed for. The Forekaster has a more open tread design and inverted sipes for better mud shedding capabilities. It also does very well in dry conditions. Cornering – Both the Forekaster and Rekon have similar sized shoulder knobs so they would be very close and equal as far as cornering abilities. Braking – Both tires offer very good braking however the Rekon with it’s wider center knobs may have a slight edge. Both are pretty equal otherwise.
